The pear shaped island of Sri Lanka is a tropical paradise, situated in the Indian Ocean. South East of India it boasts palm fringed beaches, abundant wildlife, lush tea plantations and so much more. It is identified as one of the planets bio diversity hotspots. The country has a very high level of species unique to the area; 23% of the flowering plants and 16% of the mammals can only be found in Sri Lanka. Owing much to its colonial history, the country, formally known as Ceylon, gained independence from Great Britain in 1948 and became known as Sri Lanka in 1972.

Sightseeing

Not to be missed is the World Heritage site of ‘Lion Rock’ at Sigiriya. Set in gardens, the rock rises 200m out of the ground. It is an amazing sight and the summit of the rock, which covers 1.6 hectares, is thought to be the site chosen by King Kasyapa for his fortified capital, the remains of which can still be seen today.

Agriculture

A visit to a tea plantation is a must in this country, where tea is such an important crop. Famous for good quality black and green tea, the tea industry is the main source of foreign exchange in the country. Approximately a million people are employed directly and indirectly in this sector of agriculture.

Rice, referred to as paddy, is the most important crop in the country; approximately 2.7 million tons are produced annually, supplying 95% of the domestic market. We will see evidence of rice production as we travel through the island.

Once more Bay Farm Tours scored

10 out of 10

with the Lake Garda holiday. I enjoyed every minute. The friendship and atmosphere amongst the group was exceptional.

Your Tour Manager never stopped working to make sure everything went according to plan, and it did, along with lots of fun and laughter, which made it

a wonderful tour
