South America

Renowned for its diverse climate, vegetation, landscape and people. This tour starts with 2 nights in pulsating Rio de Janeiro before we fly to the great falls of Iguassu, spending 3 nights nestled in the tropical rainforests.

Heading south to the fertile farmlands of central Argentina we take 2 nights in the Pampas area taking in agricultural and cultural visits before visiting Buenos Aires.

A certain highlight will be at the foothills of the Andes where we see glacial lakes surrounded by snow-capped mountains and volcanoes. We will be crossing the Andes by boat in a region often referred to as the “Switzerland of South America”.

Patagonia

This region is further south and straddles Chile, Argentina and the Andes. The eastern part is a flat plateau stretching across to the South Atlantic coast. The whole of the plateau is in the rain shadow of the Andes, making this very dry land. This is where there are large dry land sheep estancias, extending to 1,000’s and 1,000’s of acres, with stocking rates expressed in acres per sheep. We fly to Esquel at the western edge of the plateau, in the foothills of the Andes. It is here that we learn of the impact of the early Welsh settlers, who trekked across the Patagonian Plateau from Puerto Madryn on the Atlantic coast. From here we travel north to Bariloche which is tucked in at the foot of the spectacular Andes, and from where we cross the mountains and the border into Chile.

Agriculture

In Chile we find a different type of farming. With its Mediterranean climate, fruit and vegetable growing is of prime importance along with grapes for its huge wine industry, as well as livestock farming. Chile is now famous for its world class wineries, with exports playing a major role in the economy. The varied and interesting agriculture of Chile always surprises visitors and we make visits to beef and dairy farms, a vineyard and an arable unit, in addition to an alpaca and llama farm to see these animals in their natural environment of the Andes.
