Islay known as the Queen of the Hebrides has a population of approximately 3,000 and Scottish Gaelic is spoken by a quarter of the population. The main industries on the island are agriculture, malt whisky distilling and tourism. This island of 620 square kilometres is home to nine whisky distilleries. On arrival on the island, we will make our way to one of the many whisky distilleries for a tour & tasting.

A Highlight
It has been a long tradition on the western isles that farmers combine farming activities with fishing.
We have a visit thart reflects this tradition to a tee. Our hosts' Aberdeen Angus herd & flock of blackface ewes is now combined with a modern oyster growing operation. The oysters are farmed on the east side of Loch Gruinart, a tidal estuary on the north coast of Islay. This visit promises to be an exceedingly unique and interesting one!
Agriculture
Our visits include dairy, beef and sheep, offering an insight into the challenges for agriculture and the variable enterprises of the islands. Including an oyster farm on Islay where oysters grow well as the waters around the island are warmed by the Gulf Stream.
These warmer waters affect agriculture and vegetation in the region & you will find palm trees growing on Islay, as with many west coast islands.

We have just returned home from the holiday of a lifetime: New Zealand with Bay Farm Tours! There wasn't a single hiccup, the tours with Mattey, the hotels, food, weather, the group we were in. Everyone was so nice, and our Tour Manager was absolutely first class. He was always on hand making sure everything and everyone was happy. We would like to thank you all so much for a beautiful memorable holiday.
